MONTREAL - Jean-Claude Nduwingoma of the St. Laurent Selects broke the only fieldhouse record and McGill won seven gold medals at the second McGill Open track and field meet, in Richard Tomlinson Fieldhouse on the campus of McGill University, Saturday.

The 20-year-old from Montreal won the men's 1500m in a sizzling three minutes, 49.83 seconds, shaving the previous mark by .06 set a decade ago by Andrew McGuigan of the McGill Olympic track and field club.

McGill had a productive day, garnering seven gold medals, five silvers and three bronzes.

Hilary Kellar-Parsons, a freshman from London, Ont., led the Martlets with a pair of gold medals, winning the 300m (41.89) and anchoring the winning 4x400 relay squad (4:03.37), which was made up entirely of freshmen. She was accompanied by lead-off runner Aly McPhee, a Montreal native who was raised in Halifax, plus Alana Battiston of Toronto and Sabrina Lavoie of Montreal.

Jessica Warren, a fifth-year distance runner from Oakville, Ont., who previously competed for the McGill swam team, captured the 1500m in 4:37.54.

Deborah Lightman, a science junior from Toronto, won the 1000m and was clocked in 2:57.21.

On the men's side, Keith Esch, a 6-foot-7 native of Lake George, N.Y., who played for the basketball Redmen last year, won the high jump with a height of 1.94m. Also victorious was, freshman Maxime Beaumont-Courteau, a Montreal native, who grabbed gold in the pole vault with a height of 4.35m

The final McGill gold went to the 4x800 men's relay squad composed of leadoff runner Andrew Roberts, a sophomore from Montreal, plus junior Adrian Walton of London, Ont., Patrick McAuliffe, a fifth-year veteran from Seattle, and Stephen Douglas, a junior from Pictou, N.S.

The team will now prepare for the QSSF conference championships at Laval in Quebec City, Feb. 23-34. and the CIS championships to be hosted by McGill, Mar. 8-11.
