Martlets run away with Western cross-country title

LONDON, Ont. - McGill finished first of 13 women's teams to win the 32nd annual Western International cross-country running title at the Thames Valley Golf Club in London, Ont., Saturday.

On the men's side, McGill ended up sixth of 15 teams.

Windsor's Jackie Malette captured the women's five-kilometre race, in mild but wet conditions, with a winning time of 18 minutes, 22 seconds. Leila Angrand from Laurentian won silver (18:57) and Guelph's Rachel Cliff took the bonze (18:29).

Elspeth McGregor, a science junior from Vernon, B.C, was McGill's top performer, finishing the course in fifth place overall in 18:51.

Other Martlets in the scoring were junior Lauren Whyte (8th, 18:57) of Belleville, freshman Stephanie Magrath (9th, 18:57) from South Africa, junior Deenie Quinn (15th, 19:30) of Westfield, N.J., and senior Jessica Warren (26th, 19:56) of Oakville, Ont.

"I was pleasantly surprised and pretty pleased by our performance," said long-time head coach Dennis Barrett. "This is the first time that we have ever won this meet and we have been participating since the early 1990s."

The five scoring positions gave the Martlets 56 points. Guelph was second with 61, followed by Windsor (94), Western (110), Laurentian (147), Queen's (155), Toronto (182), Ottawa (229), Waterloo (241), McMaster (282), Nazareth College (286), Laurier (299) and Brock (390).

Rob Katz of Queen's won the men's competition, completing the 10k event in 32:55, followed on the podium by Windsor's Andrew Coates (33:04) and Steve Kozcarski (33:12).

For the Redmen, Adrian Walton, a senior running in his hometown, was clocked at 34:05 and placed 10th overall. Teammates in the scoring included Patrick McAuliffe (10th, 34:15) of Seattle, Stephen Douglas (28th, 35:09) of Pictou, N.S., James Young (52nd, 36:11), also from London, and Anthony Orth (56th, 36:27) of Vancouver, B.C.

Windsor finished atop the men's standings with 58 points, followed by Guelph (73), Western (75), Queen's (114), Dalhousie (147), McGill (155), McMaster (182), Nazareth College (201), Toronto (249), Ottawa (263), Brock (278), York (315), Waterloo (347), Laurier (404) and Nipissing (465).
