Martlets win Cross-country meet at Sherbrooke

SHERBROOKE, Que. - Trish Muddiman, a junior from Sarnia, Ont., finished second of 36 women as McGill captured the Vert & Or Invitational cross-country running meet in Sherbrooke, Saturday.

On the men's side, freshman Sebastien Flynn of Dartmouth, N.S., was McGill's top scorer for the third straight meet, finishing fifth overall as McGill came in second in the team standings, behind Sherbrooke.

Muddiman completed the four-kilometre women's course in 16 minutes, 24 seconds, not too far off the winning pace set by Sherbrooke's Annie Riopel-Meunier (16:13).

Other members of the Martlets in the scoring were senior Deenie Quinn (4th, 16:55) of Westfield, N.J., newcomer Christina Lo Basso (7th, 17:16) of Montreal, freshman Arielle Beatty (8th, 17:21) of Sharon, Ont., and Nicole Lajeunesse (11th, 17:56), a freshman from Reno, Nevada.

The Martlets finished first of four teams with 32 points, based on finshing second, fourth, seventh, eighth and 11th. Sherbrooke was second with 39 points, followed by Concordia (79) and Laval (79).

For the Redmen, Flynn was clocked at 21:03 in a race won by Sherbrooke's Alex Genest, who was first in a field of 39, completing the 7k course in 20:24.

Rounding out the McGill scorers were seniors Stephen Douglas (7th, 21:17) of Pictou, N.S., James Young (8th, 21:18) of London, Ont., and Antony Orth (12th, 21:39) of Vancouver, B.C., plus Montreal native Graydon Snider (13th, 21:41), a first-year transfer student from Carleton University.

Sherbrooke finished atop the team scoring with 16 points, followed by McGill (45), Laval (88) and Concordia (98).
