SHERBROOKE - McGill's Genevieve Jenkins, a senior from Mission, Viejo, Calif., captured three gold medals and a silver to earn female athlete-of-the-meet honours as the Martlets won the Quebec university women's track and field championship in Sherbrooke, Saturday.

It was the eighth conference title in 12 years for the Martlets, who won nine of 17 events and finished with 143 points, only three ahead of second-place Sherbrooke. The Laval Rouge et Or were third with 45 points, followed by UQAM (14) and Montreal (5).

On the men's side, Sherbrooke won their eighth consecutive provincial crown with 217 points, followed by McGill (54) and Laval (52). Laval's David Gill won gold in both the 600 and 1500 and was named male athlete of the meet.

Jenkins, a 21-year-old distance runner, dominated the 1500m race in four minutes, 44.33 seconds and anchored two winning relays - the 4x800 (9:58.08) and the 4x400 (4:00.96). She also placed second in the 1000m.

Deborah Lightman, a sophomore from Toronto, also garnered three golds for McGill, finishing first in the 1000m (2:50.33) and running leadoff in both of the winning 4x400 and 4x800 relays.

Other McGill golds came in the 3000m (Lauren Whyte, Belleville, Ont.; 10:08.23), high jump (Joanna Willms, Toronto; 1.60m), triple jump (Heather McCurdy, Belleville, Ont., 10.98m) and the 4x200 relay (1:45.43).

Joining Jenkins and Lightman on the 4x800 was Sonia Jean-Philippe of Pointe Claire, Que., and Lindsay Lessard, a fifth-year senior from Candiac, Que.

The winning 4x400 included Dubreuil in leadoff, followed by Costa, Lightman and Jenkins.

The 4x200 was composed of Montreal native Maryse Dubreuil in leadoff, followed by Camille Costa from St. Lazare, Que., Allison Wood of Dartmouth, N.S., and Hannah Moffatt of St. John's, Nfld.

In the men's competition, McGill won just two events, including the 3000m by Patrick McAuliffe, a senior from Seattle, Wash., who was clocked in 8:37.38.
