SHERBROOKE - David Faille of St. Hilaire, Que., won gold in the 60-metre sprint as McGill captured the men's division of the Vert & Or Invitational track and field meet in Sherbrooke, Saturday.

Faille, a physical education senior, was clocked in 7.01 seconds, shy of his school record 6.83 set last January. The Redmen, who also garnered a silver and three bronze medals, led all Quebec schools with 80 points, to edge out Sherbrooke, which finished with 79. Laval finished a distant third with 36.

On the women's side, Lauren Whyte of Belleville, Ont., took the 1500m in 4:58.56 as the Martlets also won five medals and finished second of three Quebec institutions. Sherbrooke won the meet with 104 points, followed by McGill (91) and Laval (51).

Other McGill medalists on the men's side include junior Andrew Roberts of Kirkland, Que., who won silver in the 600m (1:22.92). Bronze medals were won by senior Stephen Douglas (1500m, 4:08.52) of Pictou, N.S., junior Keith Esche (high jump, 1.87m) of Lake George, N.Y., and freshman Don Liu, who became the first Redmen to run the pentathlon, thereby establishing a school record with 2,309 points.

For the Martlets, Arielle Beatty, a freshman from Sharon, Ont., was clocked at 10:54.05 to win silver in the 3000m. Bronze medal finishes were accomplished by sophomore Zaria Stoffman (60m hurdles, 9.59) of Vancouver, B.C., senior Esther Usborne (pole vault, 3.20m) of Calgary and junior Heather McCurdy (triple jump, 10.71m) of Belleville.

Next on tap will be the McGill Team Challenge, Jan. 25-26, which features 17 schools and over 700 participating athletes and is billed as the second-largest university meet in Canada. Only the CIS national championships, slated to be hosted by McGill, Mar. 6-8, has more competitors entered.

The McGill Team Challenge will be held at Richard Tomlinson Fieldhouse, which was outfitted with new and improved lighting over the holidays.
