Walton waltzes to McGill Open X-country title

MONTREAL - McGill's Adrian Walton waltzed to his own beat and won gold at the 2006 McGill Open cross-country running meet on the slopes of Mount Royal, Saturday.
The 23-year-old music senior from London, Ont., completed the six-kilometre race in 19 minutes, 25 seconds. He finished first of 134 runners and helped McGill place fifth of 10 teams. Scott Emberley from the Western Ontario Mustangs was second in 19:39, while Stephen Wills of Williams College grabbed the last podium spot with a time of 19:41.
Rounding out the top five McGill scorers was Pat McAuliffe (12th, 20:02) of Seattle, Stephen Douglas (98th, 20:21) of Pictou, N.S., Anthony Orth (97th, 21:05) of Vancouver, B.C., and Jonathan Menzies (103, 21:47) from Toronto.
Williams College from Williamstown in northwestern Massachusetts, placed runners in third, fourth, six, seventh and ninth to win the 10-team men's competition with 29 points. Western Ontario was second with 77, followed by Vermont (86), Queen's (114), McGill (123), Laval (151), Ottawa (177), Sherbrooke (189), Concordia (275) and College de St. Hyacinthe (324).
In the women's division, Diana Purtz from the University of Vermont finished first and helped her school place second of seven teams.
Williams College won the team competition with their top five runners finishing ending up fifth, sixth, seventh, ninth and 12th for 39 points. Vermont was second with 8, followed by mcGill (70), Western Ontario (93), Queen's (116), Ottawa (173) and Concordia (179)
Purtz completed the four-kilometre course, run in sunny, humid conditions, in 14 minutes, 40 seconds. Teammate Carmen Lagala won silver in 14:45 and McGill's Stephanie Magrath won bronze in 15:01.
McGill's Stephanie Magrath, a biochemistry sophomore from Johannesburg, South Africa, won bronze in 15:01.
Rounding out the top five scorers for the Martlets was Elspeth McGregor (11th, 15:22), Jessica Warren (16th, 15:31), Deenie Quinn (19th, 15:37) and Jessalyn O'Donnell (21st, 15:41).
